In a new monthly feature called the MG-TV Customer Spotlight we will be interviewing video operators about their successes and challenges in delivering a local video service.
This month our spotlight will journey to Canada and WTC Communications based in Kingston Ontario. Our interview was with Dan Lawson, WTC’s Digital Video Specialist.
- WTC Profile – Subscriber Count as of August 2026 – 7332
- Video Delivery – IPTV and Streaming with customer incentives for choosing to stream.
- STB Deployment – IS-5045W6 from Innovative Systems
Lawson offered some important takeaways in our conversation:
- Providing frontline CSRs with an App Compatibility Sheet that allows them to tell customers which consumer device models will provide the best experience for the WTC streaming service.
- A great way to motivate customers to streaming is by emphasizing the speed of installation, especially if they already have a compatible device. In most cases, it only takes a few minutes instead of several hours.
Lawson concluded by stating that the most significant turning point in his career as a video technician was completing the SCTE Digital Video Engineering Professional course. This online program offered him a deeper understanding of adaptive bitrate (ABR) profile best practices, which ultimately improved the stability and compatibility of the WTC video network.
