Darien Communications has been in the subscription television industry since 2003, and the Stream Darien app was launched in March of this year. According to Amy Spinks, Director of Marketing, the app-based service’s mobility has greatly appealed to customers, as it can be more easily accessed within Darien’s managed network. This transition has also enhanced the customer experience, with all content now available in HD, compared to the previous SD quality. Furthermore, the goal of introducing a streaming video product is to attract younger subscribers who are already using streaming devices to watch content from platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and other OTT services.
STB Strategy
Darien prefers that customers utilize any eligible consumer devices with their Darien Stream service. However, they will continue to offer a traditional set-top box (STB) for those who prefer that experience. Currently, customers receive one free STB with their Darien Stream service, and any additional boxes cost $4.95 per month. According to Spinks, Darien Stream subscribers appreciate the ability to use their personal Roku, Amazon, and Apple devices to access the service, which can reduce the need for on-site service calls.
Competition Requires a Video Play
Spinks states that their Coastal Fiber venture, in partnership with Coastal Electric Cooperative, is launching fiber internet for members of Coastal Electric Cooperative in three counties: Bryan, Liberty, and Long. The primary challenge in gaining adoption for this broadband service has been the presence of an incumbent provider that offers a bundled video service. To compete effectively, Darien Communications will provide its “Stream Darien” video service to new Coastal REC customers. This initiative is expected to enhance customer uptake along with improvements in video quality and accessibility.
